<image:caption>Yesenia Castro Yesenia Castro currently serves as Workforce Development Director with the Oregon Community Health Workers Association, a nonprofit organization in Oregon, and as Outdoor Leadership Ambassador for CultureSeed in Washington state. Yesenia got her B.S in Public Health, with a focus in Health Promotion and Health Behavior from Oregon State University. Yesenia is the oldest daughter of immigrant parents that came from the beautiful states of Durango and Zacatecas, Mexico. Yesenia had the privilege of growing up on farms surrounded by forests in Mount Hood Parkdale, Oregon (Original land of the Warm Springs tribes) where her love for the outdoors grew, but it wasn't until she got older that she really started going on adventures. She is passionate about getting Latinx and BIPOC communities outdoors and exploring and looking for adventures. Yesenia hopes that by getting outdoors, traveling, and exploring as a solo Latina adventurer that she inspires other Latinx people to do the same.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Kimberly Cuevas-Márquez Hello everyone. My name is Kimberly Cuevas-Márquez and I was born and raised in Hood River, Oregon. I am currently a third year student at the University of Oregon where I am majoring in Political Science and Family and Human Services. At CultureSeed, I have been able to help facilitate the Young Women’s Peer Circles and I am also the chair of the Youth Council. Working with CultureSeed has been a real pleasure because the issues the organization addresses are issues I have experienced in my community. I look forward to the future of this organization and hope to do my part to create systemic change in what I call home.</image:caption>

Kay holds a Masters of Education in Youth Developmental Leadership at the University of Minnesota, a Masters of Social Work at California State University, and has completed her 500 hour yoga training in Cambodia through Zuna Yoga. <image:caption>Shannon O’Brien is a trauma informed yoga teacher who uses the knowledge of neuroscience, mindfulness techniques and meditation practices to support her students. She started practicing yoga in 2011 and often explains her definition of yoga as a safe place that you can always turn to. Her passion of offering yoga to EVERYONE lead her to pursue a Yoga and Social Justice 200 RYT Teacher Training Certificate and Trauma Informed Brain Sensitive Yoga Teacher Training from the Daya foundation in Portland. Her training has supported her work teaching yoga and mindfulness to people who have experienced adversity, marginalization, oppression, trauma, prejudice, and mental health challenges. Shannon has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and is currently pursuing her Master's degree in Social work at Humboldt State California. She is interested in offering yoga as an alternative modality for healing, and teaching yoga in different environments such as schools, jails/prisons, hospitals and office spaces.</image:caption>

In 2004 she embarked on her first Teacher Training journey and she continues to add to her kit of experience and knowledge so that she may share yoga with all ages and abilities. She is honored to be part of the Bending The Bars Program and looks forward to her weekly visits to teach women and youth classes at NORCOR Jail. <image:caption>At the age of 15, The YMCA director gave Paul and his friends an opportunity to go on a rafting trip down the Klamath River in California. This river experience and follow up youth guide training changed Paul's life, giving him unanticipated skills and confidence to explore local rivers. Paul found his passion for sharing river experiences with others after spending highschool summers raft guiding on the Klamath River. At Humboldt State University he studied Ecological Restoration with an emphasis in River Restoration as he continued to raft guide and teach kayaking for the university outdoor program. After graduating, Paul worked as an ACA Kayak Instructor and teacher for National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). Paul realizes the inequity within the outdoor recreation industry and sees his experience on the river as a youth unique and a major privilege - one which he sharing with others through Rivers For All.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Bending the Bars Beginnings - The Story</image:title>
<image:caption>CultureSeed programming at NORCOR started in 2016 alongside Bryan Brandenberg, the NORCOR Administrator at the time, in order to reach some of the most vulnerable in our society. Programming started as an eight-week trial of one weekly yoga class for women and one weekly class for youth. Overwhelmingly positive pre and post survey results allowed classes to continue being financed by NORCOR for three more years. Programming expanded to include classes for the Mental Health ward, Restricted Access wards and the male and female Substance Abuse Programs. Since 2016 CultureSeed has served over 2000 people in custody at NORCOR . While programming started off providing only yoga classes at NORCOR it listened to participants and expanded to include peer circles and meditation classes. We are also working with Juvenile Detention to provide one on one mental health sessions, groups, speakers and outdoor adventures to the Youth Care Center program. Kay Alton, CultureSeed’s Behavioral Health Director, is the founder of CultureSeed’s work at NORCOR, was a yoga teacher for three years in the facility and is now coordinating training and logistics. Kay started teaching yoga to inmates in 2011 at Shakopee Prison in Minnesota where she stayed for two years. Along with being a 500 hour Yoga Alliance Certified yoga teacher, Kay also has a Masters of Education and a Masters of Social Work. Yoga has been a beautiful way to weave her social work experience into her understanding of how trauma holds tight in the body. Kay has taught yoga to survivors of domestic and sexual violence at HAVEN in The Dalles, with immigrants fleeing violence and with young girls healing from sex trafficking.</image:caption>

She is excited to be teaching the Trauma Informed Module for Yoga Samadhi’s 200 hour teacher training in the spring of 2020. Kay is also the Program Director for CultureSeed’s year round immersion program and is humbled to serve as CultureSeed’s Behavioral Health Specialist.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Imelda was born in Chihuahua, Mexico, where a lot of her family still resides. A place that to this day, remains a huge slice of home. She remembers being on the road, and she’s been told that was in 2004; and although they didn’t originally place themselves in the Columbia River Gorge, they seemed to follow the Big River all the way here. Imelda heard her mother share the other day — this is her home. Every time she lands on a plane and she catches a glimpse of Mt. Hood, that’s when she knows. Something that Imelda is still learning today. She graduated from Columbia High School and experienced first-hand rural White Salmon as a teenager, living just outside of the Mt. Adams recreational area, but within city limits. She describes feeling as if she had stumbled her way to CultureSeed, finding a slice of home here, where she could tangibly see what generations past, hers included, needed all along. Learning to belong. Imelda’s background is in Psychology and Human Development, but she has shifted focus to support Programming with back-end systems, data and evaluation, translations, information technology and social media. Imelda is professionally inspired by prevention work in rural communities as well as creating safe spaces for divergence of any kind.</image:caption>

Kay lived communally in Kenya and Brussels for her first 14 years and the colorful complexity of that experience has permeated much of what she does. When she’s not working with adolescents she is probably alongside her 5 year old son and husband in the woods. Kay has a BA from UC Berkeley in Environmental Youth Therapy, an M.Ed with a focus on Youth Development Leadership, and is a Social Worker Advanced Associate working towards licensure. I’m a first generation Puerto Rican American and the first in my family to recreate outdoors. I’ve worked 10+ years as a commercial outdoor guide including owning and operating Cascade Canyon Guides here in the Gorge. Non profit experience includes working with Rohingya Refugees in Thailand, Tibetan Refugees in the Himalaya and Slum communities in Mumbai. I’m a certified wilderness first responder, ACA lead canyon guide & instructor and have spent 5+ years volunteering on local Search & Rescue teams. I’m lucky enough to spend over 200 days a year outdoors and it is my greatest joy to do so with the youth in our program. I’m grateful for this opportunity and for the people who have worked hard to make this resource available in our community.</image:caption>

She trained with and served for three years on the board of directors of the School of Lost Borders, a non-profit offering rites of passage programs which cultivate self-trust, responsibility, and understanding about one’s unique place within society and the natural world. She is a graduate of The Evergreen State College, where she studied feminism and creativity, and began a lifelong exploration of culture beyond capitalism. Recently she completed a two-year professional training in the field of trauma and resiliency. Kika homesteads with her young daughter in a self-built house on the land she first loved. <image:caption>Carolina has over two decades of professional experience in media and nonprofits in both Brazil and the USA. Her nonprofit work has often focused on youth, at first through art education with museums and art organizations, or co-founder of a cultural center to name a few. Her nonprofit management approach is place-based and collaborative, with a focus on organizational culture and coherence, capacity, systems, storytelling, and long-term strategy co-creating. Carolina’s work revolves around questions of access, equity, place, and belonging. Her mediums have been nonprofits, community engagement, and storytelling. Carolina came to the USA for an MFA and ended up an incidental immigrant. She believes that to be home is to be present and engaged with our communities and place. <image:title>Our People Gallery - Kelcey Hadden-Leggett (She/Her)</image:title>
<image:caption>Kelcey's childhood outside of Philadelphia and pursuit of her degree in Spanish with additional studies in Portuguese and Latin American studies in Pittsburgh, built the strong foundation of a compassionate but also a no nonsense go-getter who is passionate about sharing her first love, the outdoors, with as many different people and communities as possible. She first floated down a river in the middle of a 14-foot canoe, cradled by the gentle waves and the smooth paddle strokes of her parents, when she was just barely eighteen months old. She's been chasing rivers and big sunny boulders to lay on across the Americas ever since. This instant love for the outdoors and desire to work outside was fostered by her attending and working at a kayak school on the Ottawa River. As she grew, her deep love for rivers helped lead her to travel to South America to further her studies and wander in new wildernesses. Through her time working with indigenous communities abroad in Bolivia and Ecuador, Kelcey learned so much more about natural experiences and the disparities in them. She came home with a desire to focus on equity in access to the outdoors. Ever since that first job on the river, Kelcey has always found her professional life to be in the outdoors--whether on a river, trail or office, she has supported bringing experiences in nature to as many people as possible before she could even articulate why. Now a full time resident of the White Salmon valley, she remains in awe of the beauty of the natural world around her and works passionately at CultureSeed to allow others to see that wonder and feel that peace in nature. She strives to support everyone and brings a sense of belonging to those she is with. When she is not at work, she is often found flying off waterfalls, spinning around on eddy lines, skiing, painting, playing Settlers of Catan, baking, trying new recipes, gardening or strolling in the woods with her pup, Otter.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our People Gallery - Maru Quintana (She/Her)</image:title>
<image:caption>"I don't know what to tell you, I just know that friendship is born from a SMILE" — I learned this phrase from a very young age when, due to destiny, my family and I had to travel and move to another city and therefore change our house, neighborhood, school, friends and more… but always full of love and understanding from my parents. The truth is that a smile is a universal language and does not need translations. I was born in beautiful Chihuahua, Mexico, grew up in more than 5 cities and went to more than 10 schools until I "settled" in Chihuahua where I met my husband and we formed our own family with three children, but the trip did not end there. In our life together, we have moved many times, but the biggest change was arriving in the United States, with our suitcases full of illusions and dreams; dreams that are more difficult when you have the barrier of language and customs, but how good it is to know that you have the love, support and understanding of your family no matter how difficult the daily battle is. I can say that living here in the Gorge is where I feel like home is, it is where I have lived the longest of my life, almost 12 years! I love nature, walking and enjoying a sunny day. It fascinates me to see how the seasons of the year change. It is so wonderful to see how the trees lose their leaves, hibernate, wake up and give us their fruits again. Every morning I give thanks for the new day. I feel happy for the footprints that I have left in my path and excited for the ones that I can leave. Every day I am ready to have a SMILE for whoever needs it.</image:caption>

I am a clinical social worker and I have over nine years of racial and gender advocacy, survivor support, community facilitation, and individual care work. I’ve spent much of my life traveling all around the west, sometimes running and other times healing from my past of trauma. Along the way I have lived and worked in many capacities over the years (I’ve been a stone mason, ranch hand, barista, wilderness therapy guide, moose hunting guide, farmer, housekeeper, nanny, and the list goes on). I am very proud to center the lessons learned and the diversity of teachers I have met over those years as a pillar in everyday practice. I believe that each individual is full of amazing things they can teach, as much as they are full of things to learn. I don’t think there is ever just one right way to be in this world and I hold that belief as a guide in my social work. I am thrilled to meet, learn with, stand beside, and laugh with the CultureSeed community.</image:caption>

In 2022, Taylor graduated with her Masters of Social Work degree from Portland State University where she first connected with CultureSeed as a student intern. <image:caption>Julie grew up outside of Portland, Oregon, and spent her time playing in the woods and raising orphaned birds, squirrels, and possums. Now, she is beyond honored to sit with youth in circle at Cultureseed. Julie has been working with youth and families in schools, the community, and nature for eighteen years. At Friends of the Children, Julie mentored youth then developed and managed programming for fifth through twelfth graders. Through this work, youth and mentors participated in the Portland to Coast Walk, Seattle to Portland Bike Ride, Rafting the Lower Salmon River, and more simple pleasures like cooking meals and doing homework. After receiving her masters in social work Julie worked as a school-based therapist in East Portland at Reynolds and HB Lee Middle Schools. When the desire to take in the expansive view of the Gorge and to walk daily in the wild grew too big to ignore, Julie moved to Mosier where she lives with three crazy animals and her bird-loving wife. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Julie works part-time at Whitson Elementary and in private practice in Hood River. Julie’s heart-work is serving TGNC and LGBQAI+ youth and adults. For many of us, embracing who we are in the larger United States culture is not easy. Julie believes that in order to practice loving ourselves and connecting to our place in the world we need community. Through community, we can experience the belonging that allows us to fight internalized oppression and gain the energy to fight for social justice.</image:caption>

Pocatello is located on the north American steppe; this landscape is the traditional homelands of the Shoshone and Bannock people - Sho-Ban as a post contact creation. Also, lake Maracaibo - a large tidal bay and inlet of the Caribbean Sea - it was once the largest lake in South America and geological record calls it one of the oldest lakes on earth. Asnoldo considers himself a deep thinker, reflective participant and committed community member. He advocates for intergenerational thinking and is a spontaneous motivator. In leadership Asnoldo acts as a guide to encourage self-motivated and empowered thought partners who can move their visions into actions collectively and individually. He is also committed to an ever-growing awareness of how we perform self and how that performance influences our personal beliefs, our community trust, and our social responsibility. Asnoldo earned a Master of Science in Natural Science Education and Environment and Natural Resource from the University of Wyoming. As part of the Teton Science Schools graduate fellowship he lived, learned, and taught within a wildlife corridor facing the eastern slope of the Tetons. <image:title>Our People Gallery - Edgar Cortes (He/Him)</image:title>
<image:caption>I was born and raised in the state of Washington and have lived in the Columbia Gorge area for most of my life. Growing up I couldn’t afford ski trips, going windsurfing/kiteboarding, rafting trips or many of the other cool outdoor activities the Gorge has to offer. Still, I was more than happy playing soccer with childhood friends in our backyards. In many ways I can relate with the underserved youth of the community, but I hope to bring them more opportunities to explore the outdoors, find themselves and unlock their potential. Since my teen years I have lived an active lifestyle and throughout my academic career I have always been involved with school sports, but now I mostly stick to road-running, long boarding and hiking with my dog (Go Dawgs). To keep strong I do yoga and mindful meditation along with some breath work. I have a degree in Public Health (Woof Woof), I enjoy pizza and I am a fan of THE turtles named after renaissance artists. Lastly, I have some experience as a Firefighter/EMT and I enjoy anime manga/marvel comics. Now that I am a part of CultureSeed I want to serve as a role model and friend.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Devin has been finding joy in nature ever since he was scaring his mom by diving into glacial lakes, mountain streams and even the North Sea one stormy fall day. This love of water and adventure has translated into finding a home in the Pacific Northwest with his partner and their adorable dog, Otter. He has spent time working as a kayak instructor, raft guide, an ill fated day as a fly fishing guide, middle school math teacher, high school math teacher, and an ill fated semester teaching chemistry. When he isn't in a classroom or sharing his love for the outdoors with others, you can find him riding his bike, taking photos, honing his chess or cribbage skills, making homemade pasta or sourdough and trying to figure out how he can take Otter whitewater kayaking safely.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Hello there! I’m Clare, and I use she/her pronouns. My name comes from a song by Gilbert O’Sullivan. I’m not Irish though–truthfully, I’m in the market for 23 and Me. Currently, I am living in the Gorge, I just wrapped up my MSW program at the School of Social Work of Portland State University. I’m honored to be working with CultureSeed as the co-facilitator of the Women’s Health Group at Columbia High School! I have years of professional peer support behind me as wilderness therapy guide for two years, a Youth Advocate for Columbia and Clackamas County for about another two, then as a Lead Peer Support Specialist and team supervisor for a remote, peer support organization. Every year, I am reminded of the power and wisdom of lived experience, and I am grateful to be in a community that shares similar values. I hope to show up with advocacy, critical thinking, humor, curiosity, anti-racism, feminism, and justice to everything I do! It shows up as I rock climb, birdwatch, protest, play with my dog, sit around a fire with friends…all of it.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Alyson Castonguay moved to the Columbia River Gorge just before starting 8th grade and spent her middle and high school years in Skamania County, living in a house that her family shared with her mother’s art gallery. She graduated from Central Washington University with a Bachelor of Science in Sociology, minoring in Music and Women’s Studies, where she discovered her passion for activism. After college, Alyson lived and worked in Portland, serving as Assistant Director on the boards of the Lesbian Community Project and LGBTQ Mormons (Latter-day Saints), all while building a career in live sound. In 2006, she returned to the Gorge to work at Renaissance Learning as an Audio Engineer, where she remains a valued member of the creative team. The pandemic reignited her love for podcast editing, leading her to work on two #1 fiction podcasts. When she’s not in her home studio, you can find her mixing live shows across the Gorge. Alyson currently serves on the board for the Skamania County Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse and helps to organize Skamania Pride events and activities. She is passionate about ensuring that youth have the support they need to be themselves, connect with nature and their communities, and feel a sense of belonging. In her free time, Alyson loves swimming and being on, in, or under water.</image:caption>

I have grown a renewed appreciation for the beautiful place we live in and love to share that with others. I have spent five years working in different outdoor education spaces, all with an emphasis on activism and accessibility. I am passionate about creating inclusive outdoor spaces and providing opportunities for people to explore the outdoors in new ways. I recently spent a season working at the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center running courses in adaptive outdoor sports for individuals with disabilities and at-risk youth. I currently work in special education at Whitson Elementary and coach middle and high school water polo in Hood River. I love to spend time skiing, hiking, backpacking, climbing, camping, sewing, painting, playing music, and am most at home paddling my outrigger canoe. <image:caption>Hi, I'm Carlye Cunniff. I'm a dancer, movement educator and choreographer, and love working with groups of people who are trying to do hard things. I believe movement, especially movement in nature, is one of the most powerful things we can do as people, and I'm so honored to help facilitate that with CultureSeed. I have worked with young people in the outdoors as an outdoor educator for parks and recreation programs, on wilderness immersion programs (mostly on bikes and kayaks), as the inclusion coordinator for Campfire USA and in a specialized outdoor experience environment for youth experiencing grief and trauma. When I'm not exploring the gorge or working with youth at CultureSeed, you'll find me teaching movement at NK Studios in Bingen or facilitating groups of adults to build systems that help them work better together.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our People Gallery - Skylar Walton</image:title>
<image:caption>Hello, my name is Skylar Walton! I am a junior at Stevenson High School and have lived in the Gorge my entire life. I bounced back and forth between many different towns in the Gorge but ultimately ended up in a small community named Mill A where I spent 13 of the 17 years I’ve been alive. I grew up in a very rough household with many responsibilities that I had to take care of at a very young age. I also grew up with a lot of trauma and things that made life extremely difficult. But one of the biggest things that I don’t do is let that trauma define who I am as a person. I use it as an inspiration to help people and to be kind and respectful to everyone around me. One of the biggest things that I love to do is sing! I will sing anywhere at any time! Singing has helped me through a lot of my trauma and I am very passionate about it! Right now I am a bass singer and strive to create my own acapella group after I go to college for music or possibly during college! That’s all! Thanks!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Kathleen Pratt is a naturopathic physician and midwife in Hood River Oregon. Her clinical experience has ranged from community clinics such as Outside In in Portland Oregon to more recently private practice here in the Columbia River Gorge. In her practice Kathleen focuses on functional medicine- to create optimization in all aspects of health- physical, mental and emotional. This includes supporting the current symptoms, as well as identifying what has led to these symptoms and how to create health moving forward in the manner of prevention. The importance of cultivating relationships with the natural environment and community are stressed in addition to focusing on health and vitality. Kathleen grew up in rural Maine with nature right outside her backdoor. These early years created a love of the nature that continues to be a priority in her life today with her family. Kathleen lives in the Gorge community with her husband and eight year old daughter. Together they explore the water and mountains in their truck camper- which they live and travel in for four months each fall. When at home she keeps busy biking, kiting, skiing and spending time in her garden with her beehives and chickens.</image:caption>

You can find him chasing waterfalls, playing in various sports leagues, snowshoeing and snowboarding, and adventuring with my wife and son.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Way back in the 90s, originally from the Atlanta-metro area and after fleeing the city to the Appalachian mountains for whitewater raft guide lifestyle, I found myself 30 years later in the Columbia Gorge with a husband and a 16 year old boy. The outdoors is my family’s and my lifestyle, not only whitewater, also skiing, mountain biking, and etc. I am also a Medicaid provider private practice and I work with families, children, and individuals with anxiety, depression, and trauma. I am the mental health provider at the day treatment Gorge Academy for ESD 112. I am a DCR for Klickitat. I have a passion for helping others who do not have access to emotional and mental health support as well as access to nature and being outside. All youth deserve play and nature and without that I believe we lose connection to our own humanity and each other and to our home, tribe, community which is our resilience.</image:caption>
